im really mad??? wow rant under cut

When they revealed the designs for the Monobear Kids for Zettai Zetsubou Shoujo, I was so happy. Their designs were fantastic and adorable, and Monica was just a gem to see happen. Before the personality blurbs were revealed I did have a little inkling of suspicion that Nagisa might be nonbinary, but I wasn’t positive that the game would actually do that because, well, it hasn’t happened before. Lots of anime have nb/trans/etc. characters that get overlooked due to bad English translations and misunderstanding (Crona Gorgon, Grell Sutcliff, just to name a couple). But when the blurbs came out and they specifically did not use any gendered pronouns for Nagisa, which is a name that can be used for both genders (Nagisa Furukawa, who is female; Nagisa Hazuki, who is male, for example), it became safe to assume that Nagisa is a nonbinary character. I don’t get what the difficult concept about that is? I used to thing the Dangan Ronpa fandom had a little too much social justice with the Chihiro issue, with people saying he’s female/trans/nonbinary (but I’m so not going into that issue right now), but with Nagisa??? I’ve already seen RPers of these kids, which is astounding, and some of those RPers have been referring to Nagisa as male and other people have defended them for this, which is quite frankly absolutely ridiculous. If something has not been confirmed, do not assume it’s one way or the other. Because honestly, trying to assert Nagisa as one gender or the other at this point is essentially like trying to say Monica would look better without the wheelchair. It’s completely ridiculous to say that Nagisa is of binary gender when it’s so very obvious that they are not. Please, DR fandom, entertain this concept. It’s really not that difficult to just use “they” in place of a gendered pronoun. It’s not that much of a hassle, honestly.
